Great blog! However what competitors do is not allways better.

Some competitors are big players with huge budgets and that can build trust and brand their website.

It is all about trust.

Hi Barni,

It depends mostly on the market and country in which your competitors are. In some countries (like Croatia), companies are obligated to submit their annual financial report to the government and part of this report is available to entrepreneurs.

As for the traffic volume and source, http://www.compete.com gives you a pretty good guess especially for US visitors. For the rest you can use http://www.alexa.com but it becomes very unreliable when the traffic is low. Also, there are other tools which are used in specific cases...

I hope I helped.

Hi, I think it's very true what's written above but I don't understand one thing. You talk about researching our competitors? Are there any techniques to do this? How do I know how much a competitor is selling or how much traffic their site recieves? Maybe if the company was publicly traded or made public any sales data but most companies don't do that. Any help would be appreciated because I see similar advice in a lot of places, I just don't know how to actually do it.

Thanks!

I think another thing that goes towards improving conversion rates is having an easy to use search feature. I've picked up one problem in the magento search feature that makes this more difficuly. Understandibly, if a user searches "cm" instead of "coolermaster", then the system won't pick up. So magento has the great feature of looking at old search terms and assigning synonyms so that they work in future. But then Magento decided to go and make this feature a waste of time by not implementing wild card search terms. So basically, if I set the synonym as above and someone types "cm", they will find all the coolermaster stuff. However, if they type "cm" in any sort of phrase, it won't work because it won't convert "cm" to its synonym. I think this is extremely irriating and am surprised I can't find this problem elsewhere ... by being able to include that search term as a wild card will prevent it, and will lead to a better search function, which in turn leads to a better conversion rate and less bounced customers.

Perhaps Inchoo could provide a tutorial or build a module to fix this in Magento ;)

Fantastic guide there. We had to tinker with our Magento checkout but we've got it perfect now... it took a lot of split testing though!
