If you are a regular visitor of our blog, you will know that we usually write about Magento. Sometimes about WordPress, tools we use or we are just making fun. This article is a little different. It is not about us. It is about you. We will overview 10 top world cities that visit this site. This way we wish to thank you for your visits, comments and inquiries.

According to Google Analytics, your dearest website had 663,369 uniques in 2010. Here is the list of top 10 cities where most of our visitors were coming from at 2010. There are some that you could expect and there are some surprises.

1. London, United Kingdom

Visits: 22,368
Although it is not a huge surprise that London is the top city, it is a surprise that it has over double visits compared to 2nd closest. Since there are many ISPs visitors are coming from, it looks like there is a lot of Magento development subjects that are generating majority of the visits.

2. Osijek, Croatia

Visits: 9,537
Our dearest Osijek is not a surprise also. Inchoo is located at this cozy town of 100.000 population at north-east of Croatia. I guess most of those visits came from the employees.

3. Paris, France

Visits: 9,326
Another European capital. Looks like there are French people who want to read English language after all. Magento community is strong in France, gathered around Fragento site I guess.

4. Chennai, India

Visits: 8,231
I’m not sure how did it happen, but this city of 4,6 mil people is full of Magento developers. If you google for “Chennai Magento”, you will find whole army of Magento developers, freelancers, hosting companies, courses and teachers. There is a rumor that they are building a monument for Roy Rubin at the central square. (Just joking)

5. Sydney, Australia

Visits: 6,887
Although 3 of our designers (Lyssandro, Renato and Rafael) are living or were living there, I am sure they were not the only ones who are visiting us from there.

6. New York, USA

Visits: 6,706
Ok, ok. This one needs no explanation. It would be weird if we didn’t have Big Apple on this list. We usually have cca 18 visits/day from New York, but for some weird reason on February, 4th we got 194 at the same day. 90% were direct visits. Maybe some article was published about us at some newspaper. However, it looks like we’ll never know why on this particular day number of visits increased so drastically.

7. Pune, India

Visits: 6,509
1,121 km from Chennai lies Pune with 3,4 mil people and very similar percentage of Magento developers. I am wondering if you guys are organized somehow. Do some institutions support this kind of massive specialization in your city?

8. Hanoi, Vietnam

Visits: 6,079
We know that our beloved Asia Connect guys are from this city. Long time ago they were stealing our articles, but later we made a peace pact when they started to place a credit line and backlink to original article. Beside Asia Connect, there are a lot of freelancers and companies specializing in Magento.

9. Mumbai (Bombay), India

Visits: 5,542
This wast city of over 13 million people is not a surprise. City is well known for software industry and Magento knowledge-seekers should not be much different.

10. Zagreb, Croatia

Visits: 5,283
Although this is Croatian capital, it is a little surprise. Magento is not so popular in Croatia. I believe there are only few stores here and we get only rare Magento inquiries. Despite the fact, we are very glad to have purgers on the list.

Once more, thank you our dear visitors for coming here, arguing, asking questions and sharing knowledge. We’ll be with you in 2011.

So, where are you from?

I’ve heard of PostRank a long time ago and I’ve been using it since to track the influence of certain websites in the social web. PostRank makes awesome rang lists for almost any topic you can think of, ranking websites by their social influence. Have a look at the E-Commerce topic to see what I’m talking about.

Recently, PostRank launched their PostRank Connect service, which came with a free PostRank Analytics account. I’ve been looking into PostRank Analytics for some time now so I grabbed the opportunity to have a free account at my disposal. Needless to say, this made my day.

What is PostRank Analytics?

PostRank Analytics is a service that tracks user engagement with your website, both on and off site. This includes all sorts of social networks, bookmarking and sharing websites, comments and responses.

Why do I need to use it?

I might sound lame with this one, but, web has seriously evolved in the past few years. Most of the stuff that goes on around your website is no longer located on your website. It has become extremely hard to keep track of everything that’s happening everywhere on the web. PostRank Analytics makes it easy for you. Now that I tested it, I can say without doubt that this Analytics service is a must have for web content publishers, and likely for other kinds of websites as well.

Google Analytics just isn’t able to track everything anymore. It doesn’t give me any data on some really important stats which I, as an internet marketer, simply have to track.

PostRank Analytics key features:

Track up to 5 websites on a single account. No installation required, just add URL, verify and you’re on!

Extremely clear overview of social engagement with graphs showing you date, amount of engagement, and RSS items that were created on that day. Even more in depth reports can be viewed on daily or per RSS item bases.

You can even set-up custom pages that are not part of your RSS feed to be tracked, such as landing pages or static content by simply adding an URL.

PostRank Analytics shows you the list of people that are sharing your content the most for every social network individually in the last three months. You can easily see which users are bringing you the most benefit. It also has awesome demographic stats of these social networks displayed right above this data.

Give it a try, I find this service extremely useful. It’s not a usual over-hyped social media tool. This is the true Analytics of today. If used together with Google Analytics, this is the real deal.

If you updated to latest Magento 1.4.0.0 or 1.4.0.1 version you may notice that Google Analytics implementation is broken. Here are few easy instructions how to fix this.

Navigate to and open app/code/core/Mage/GoogleAnalytics/Block/Ga.php and add this on line 179

var _gaq = _gaq || [];

Since this bug is already reported and fix can be seen on latest official svn, I don’t see any harm in modifying core files in this particular situation.

As Magento Team said, changes will be included in next stable release.

Google Analytics has always shown you how people search to find your site. With Site Search, you can now see how people search your site once they are already on it. This is a goldmine of information because every time visitors search, they literally tell you in their own words what they are looking for.

How do I set up Site Search tracking for my Analytics profile?

Step 1. Log in to your Google Analytics account.

Step 2. Go to: “Analytics Settings > Profile Settings > Edit Profile Information” and enter Magento site search query parameter “q” (GET parameter) in the input filed provided.

Then the Site Search reports appear within the Content section.

You can read more about Site Search here. If you wish to know how to properly set-up Analytics on your Magento site, read this.

Some of you who work with Magento for a long time might think that this topic is so clear that it doesn’t need to have an article. We get many inquiries to finalize the work somebody already started. One of the things we notice is that some developers tend to embed the Google Analytics code directly in the Magento theme files. Yes, it works and you will see the standard traffic data in the Google Analytics interface, but it is not a way to go.

In most of the cases, those developers edit footer.phtml in app/design/frontend/default/[your_theme]/template/page/html folder. As I said, the Google Analytics will track visitors data properly, but the main issue is that the eCommerce data will not be collected. To enable eCommerce data to be visible, first step is that you let Google Analytics to know that the profile is actually an E-Commerce site.

You will get to this interface by

Logging to Google Analytics

Select an account for this site

On the list of Account profiles, do not go to the reports, click on Edit instead

On the first box “Main Website Profile Information”, there is another Edit link to the right. Click on it.

One there, you will see the interface similar to the one on this image. Let Google Analytics know this is an eCommerce website

Although Google Analytics will tell you to embed the javascript code on your website, you don’t have to do that. You just need to see what is the Web Property ID of the profile. One you know it, go to the Magento administration to the interface: System> Configuration> Google API> Google Analytics. Enable it and insert that Web Property ID. Viola.

Forums say that older versions of Magento before 1.2 do not properly track eCommerce data. In case you have older version of Magento and have this issue, do not install some special plugins. Upgrade Magento instead.

Did you know that you can actually track what your visitors are searching for inside your website? We are going to explain you how it’s done via Google’s Analytics tool. It is possible to track your internal site searches if your internal search engine passes the search term in the query string as Google Analytics tracks everything entered in location bar of user’s browser.

In order to set up your internal site search tracking you will need to:

Edit your main profile information settings and select the ‘Do Track Site Search’ option.

Enter in the query parameter that appears in your URL when you search on your site. Make sure to enter in just the part before the ‘=’. For example, in the URL: http://inchoo.net/?s=seo, the s is the site search query parameter.

Save Changes.

How can internal site search analysis benefit me?

If you are using Google Analytics you probably know where do your visitors come from and what search terms do they use to find you. However the search terms you see are the terms you are already search engine optimized for as they can already find you via thees terms. If you start tracking what are your visitors searching for once they are already inside your website you will understand what other search terms you might wish to optimize your website for.

Not only the keywords that your visitors are searching for inside your website are important, you can also track the start and destination pages.

Start pages are pages from where your visitors start their search on your website. If some page inside your site is often a start page for site search this means visitors can’t find what they are looking for on that website. You should find destination pages for thees searches and see what are they actually looking for on the start page and try to optimize the start page’s content and include more valuable content for your visitor.
