How popular is Magento in 2020?

Inchoo was founded in 2008. Around the same time, the Magento came to life as one of the eCommerce platforms and solutions for online stores. We have been with Magento right from the start, following all its iterations, ups and downs.

It had its share of fame during the years. But now, 12 years later, the question is – How popular is Magento in 2020?

To answer that question we are going to look at Google Trends worldwide data. Because, we are interested to see how many searches, or interest, there is for “Magento”

It’s because we think that popularity is shown by interest (searches) in comparison to other platforms and related terms. As stated in the Merriam-Webster dictionary:

  • of or relating to the general public

Of course, popularity in its whole can not be seen only through Google Trends and searches/interest. One other way is to check how many online stores are on which eCommerce platform. In this post, we shall look only at data from Google Trends.

Lets first try to compare/relate Magento with eCommerce in 2020.

magento vs ecommerce google trends 2020

As we can see, “eCommerce” is taking spot number one. But, “Magento” is close enough.

But, was it like that in the past? Let’s take a look at Magento vs eCommerce from 2008 until today:

magento vs ecommerce from 2008

Around March of 2009 “magento” was more popular than “eCommerce” itself! And Magento held its ground until May of 2018. But, if we also take into account “e-commerce” term, the decline in “popularity” began much sooner.

magento vs ecommerce e commerce 2008

Fun fact – did you knew that “e-commerce” term was more popular than “ecommerce” term in the early 2000s?

What was the reason behind the decline of “magento”?

New competitors began to emerge that were more attractive to a wider audience of eCommerce startups could be one of the reasons…

Magento vs competing eCommerce platforms

There are many competing platforms in 2020. We have selected the top 4 and compare them to “magento” in 2020.

magento vs ecommerce platforms

As we can see, “shopify” is the most popular competing platform at the beginning of 2020. Magento is trailing in second place closely followed by “woocommerce”. BigCommerce and OpenCart have very small results.

How did they fare if we look at the last 5 years?

The rise of “shopify” in 2016 affected in some ways the decline of other platforms. It’s very evident that lines of all other platforms started to decline at the same time when Shopify took over number one.

Countries where Magento is popular

We have also extracted data from Google in which countries’ interest in “magento” is the biggest in 2020.

Is this a surprise? Who else expected to find Latvia as a country where the interest for “magento” is the greatest?

What about Youtube?

Youtube is the second largest search engine in the world today. This fact alone demands to look at that data:

magento vs ecommerce platforms youtube

We see similar results as when looking at “web search”. Magento is in third place, trailing behind “woocommerce” which is now in second place.

Knowing that Youtube is a video platform – can we say that there are not many “magento” videos out there? And, is this small popularity the result of a small number of available videos? Perhaps because Magento is much better documented than in the early years, and a decent part of Shopify’s marketing model revolves around affiliates who produce a lot of content (mostly videos).

Well, I guess we need to start to produce Magento videos – no matter what the answer to the above questions can be.

Conclusion

And although the original article from 2010. stated that Magento is very popular – we can not say that anymore. But we can say that Magento as an eCommerce platform changed a lot from its early days. And because of that, it is intended for specific types of e-commerce stores.

Make no mistake – It is still very popular. But not on the number one spot. Nevertheless, we still love you Magento!
